Masterclass: AI-based diagnostics - learnings from a real-world use case

21st October @ 9:00AM GMT

AI-based diagnostics tools for early screening have a great potential to promote prevention, prompt early initiation of treatment and improve outcomes. However, we have not seen much data showing real-world implementation of these tools yet. In this masterclass, Zachary Tan (Advisor at CancerAid; Venture Creation Partner at Aegis Ventures; more info here) & Lisa Zhu (Research Fellow of the Center for Eye Research Australia) will walk us through the key learnings from their latest article in Scientific Reports (Nature) on real-world AI-based screening for diabetic retinopathy in Australia. This early-stage study is one of the first globally to describe the real-world implementation of AI in healthcare. In this session led by Zachary & Lisa we will deep dive into:

  • What can AI do? How do AI-based screening programs compare to reference standards? Are there other capabilities which are only enabled by AI?
  • Challenges in applying AI in the real-world of these tools into hospital systems, physicians workflows and referral pathways.  What else is needed to build clinicians’ trust on these systems?
  • How do we address these challenges? Methods to improve real-world uptake and to engage clinicians, patients and organizational stakeholders with AI-based screening tools.
  • AI’s future: How do we best use these tools in real-world settings, beyond tests and research studies. How do we see the field developing and growing?
